A lather developed the VACUUM CUP feature
when he noticed holes drilled in the grasp of his
handle massaged away callouses.
Its soundness can be demonstrated by a simple ex-
periment. Just grasp a smooth handle firmly for a
few seconds before releasing the grasp quickly. If
the release has been quick enough the palm will be
revealed as being white — showing the blood has been
driven from the surface of the skin. As blood natur-
ally rushes back very rapidly after pressure is re-
moved, this whiteness can be observed for a few
seconds only.
If a vacuum cup handle is now grasped as firmly
and released as quickly, red dots will reveal the
place where the vacuum cups were. Hence, as the
grasp shifts in working, blood is permitted to nour-
ish the skin, keep it alive, and thereby prevent the
lormation of callouses.

HEADQUARTERS FOR QUALITY HANDLES SINCE 1865
In the heart of the Ash and Hickory country, surrounded by more than a score of blank Handle mills
supplying the main plant, "The home of Hartwell" is the finishing and shipping point for millions of Hartwell
Ash and Hickory Handles every year.
This plant in Memphis, Tennessee, with its modern facilities and* skilled craftsmen is evidence of a continu-
ing stride in the progress which started almost a century ago. A complete Ash agricultural tool handle factory
in Laurel, Miss., and a central warehouse in Chicago Heights, 111., give further proof of Hartwell leadership. As
pioneers in superior grading, specifications and manufacturing methods, Hartwell has long been the name
known as the standard of quality throughout the industry. It is your guarantee of constant and uniform quality,
backed by almost 100 years of handle making. Dependability of supply is assured by the strategic locations
of our many blank mills.
As new advances are made, Hartwell Brothers will continue to pioneer. Hartwell Vacuum Cup and the
Hartwell self-fitting eye handles are two outstanding examples. Installation of the most modern facilities will
continue to keep step with progress to the end that whatever your needs in handles, Hartwell Brothers will al-
ways be the name to remember.
FROM 97 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE HARTWELL BROTHERS OFFERS
FACTS ABOUT HICKORY
(The best buy is in the best quality)
The best handles are made from young second growth trees which has had fast growth. Fast growth is evi-
denced by thick annual growth rings which adds strength, and is also indicative of long tough fibers.
Hartwell's customers are fully protected against handle warpage, but there are means by which the customer
can somewhat control warpage and general deterioration of handles. Handles should not be ordered in a
quantity which will be in stock for more than six months. Regardless of ideal storage facilities some hickory
has a tendency to warp after months in storage even tho $ie moisture content is at a minimum.
Handles should be stored in a cool dry place. Do not store near any heating device, nor close to ceiling where
heat accumulates. The best way to store handles is to keep them in the shipping container and laying flat until
they are needed in the sales rack or bin.
